Florida jumps, Buffalo survives, and Chicago closes Week 3

Florida made the loudest move of the college weekend. Buffalo found a different way to stay unbeaten. And Chicago sent Philadelphia home with its first loss on Monday night. September is nearly finished, but the next viewing calendar already starts Thursday.

Here is our September 29 catch-up on selected college Week 4 and NFL Week 3 results, followed by games to watch October 1-5. Scores, rankings and listings were checked September 29. All upcoming kickoff times are Eastern; TV listings are for U.S. viewers.

Florida changes the conversation; Texas stays on top

Florida 52, Ole Miss 28

One week after Ole Miss beat LSU, Florida handed the Rebels a much different afternoon. The Gators won 52-28 in Gainesville on September 26, with Jadan Baugh and Duke Clark each rushing for more than 100 yards. Florida's official recap details how the running game drove the win.

That is the result to start with if you missed Saturday. A win over a highly ranked opponent gets attention; putting up 52 makes Florida a team worth actively finding on the schedule.

The AP Top 25 through September 26 moved Florida from No. 21 to No. 8, with Ole Miss dropping from No. 4 to No. 9. Texas, Georgia and Notre Dame remain the top three. Miami is fourth and Ohio State fifth. Those are the current rankings; the numbers attached to Saturday's matchups were the pregame rankings.

Texas 20, Tennessee 17

Texas improved to 4-0 with a three-point win in Knoxville. The standout number in the Longhorns' game report is 10 sacks, the second-highest single-game total in program history.

After the comeback against Ohio State earlier this month, Texas has another close win to carry forward. This time the defense supplies the clearest explanation for why the Longhorns are still unbeaten. A three-point margin can make every late snap feel precarious, but that much pressure is a substantial advantage.

Buffalo survives five turnovers; Chicago finishes the week

Bills 24, Chargers 16

In last week's column, we asked whether Buffalo's defense could give its offense more help. Sunday's answer was emphatic: the Bills won 24-16 despite five offensive turnovers, took their first lead in the fourth quarter and improved to 3-0. The Bills' recap covers the comeback.

The encouraging part is that Buffalo could win a game so different from its first two. The caution is just as obvious: five giveaways cannot become a habit. Sunday's visit from New England gives us the next chance to see whether the Bills can pair that defensive support with a cleaner offensive afternoon.

Three games highlighted in our previous post went to Atlanta, Baltimore and Denver. PFF's Week 3 roundup records these finals:

• Falcons 35, Packers 14: Atlanta took Thursday night's game in Green Bay.
• Ravens 34, Cowboys 31: Baltimore came out ahead in the three-point finish.
• Broncos 30, Rams 26: Los Angeles could not follow its Monday win over the Giants with another victory.

For the Rams, the next stop is Philadelphia. That matchup now puts two teams coming off losses into the same early Sunday window.

Bears 27, Eagles 7

Case Keenum threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score as Chicago beat Philadelphia on September 28. The Eagles managed 248 total yards and turned the ball over three times, according to Philadelphia's official recap.

Chicago led only 10-7 at halftime, then scored the game's remaining 17 points. That second half is the useful takeaway: the Bears turned a close game into a comfortable finish, while Philadelphia never found another scoring drive.

October 1-5: the next games to put on your calendar

The NFL selections follow the league's published schedule. Georgia's September 28 kickoff announcement confirms this Saturday's Vanderbilt game and the following week's trip to Alabama.

• Sunday, Oct. 4, 1:00 p.m.: New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills — CBS.
• Sunday, Oct. 4, 1:00 p.m.: Los Angeles Rams at Philadelphia Eagles — FOX.
• Sunday, Oct. 4, 8:20 p.m.: Detroit Lions at Carolina Panthers — NBC.
• Monday, Oct. 5, 8:15 p.m.: Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints — ESPN.

Sunday starts early. The London game adds a morning window before the usual afternoon choices. Bills-Patriots and Rams-Eagles overlap, so choose your priority before kickoff; afternoon broadcasts depend on your local market.

Keep the two Georgia dates separate. Vanderbilt visits on October 3. Georgia goes to Alabama on October 10 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC. This weekend gives us another look at the No. 2 Bulldogs before that road game.
