Football catch-up: Texas rallies, Buffalo rolls, and the next games to watch

Need to catch up? Football has not slowed down: Texas turned a near-certain loss into a one-point win, Buffalo put together two big offensive performances, and Ole Miss made Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford a losing one. Here is the catch-up, through Monday night, and a short list of games to build the next weekend around.

College football: Texas finishes the comeback, Ole Miss holds on

Texas 24, Ohio State 23: a quick refresher

Ohio State led 23-3 entering the fourth quarter in Austin on September 12. Texas scored three touchdowns in the final period, with Hollywood Smothers' one-yard run putting the Longhorns ahead with 25 seconds remaining. The Associated Press recap has the details of the 24-23 finish.

For anyone who read our preview and then missed the game, the final score hides just how much control Ohio State had to give away. The closing possessions were the story.

Ole Miss 32, LSU 24; Kentucky 31, Texas A&M 21

September 19 brought another shake-up. Ole Miss led LSU 24-7 at halftime, then needed a late end-zone interception to preserve a 32-24 win in Kiffin's return. Kentucky also beat Texas A&M 31-21 on the road. Both results are covered in AP's Saturday roundup.

The shared lesson from the last two Saturdays: a big halftime advantage still leaves a lot of football. Texas completed its recovery; LSU got close enough to threaten one.

In the September 20 AP poll, Texas stayed No. 1 after beating UTSA 30-6. Georgia and Notre Dame followed, Ole Miss moved to No. 4, and Indiana rounded out the top five. LSU slipped to No. 10; Texas A&M fell to No. 23.

NFL: Buffalo starts fast, and the Rams answer on Monday

Two wins and 77 points for Buffalo

Our previous Sunday pick delivered: the Bills beat Houston 36-31 on September 13. Buffalo then defeated Detroit 41-31 on Thursday, September 17, moving to 2-0. Against the Lions, Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more.

The offense gives Buffalo fans plenty to enjoy. The other number to keep in view is 62 points allowed across those two games. Our next watch point is whether Buffalo can create a little more breathing room for its offense instead of needing another high-scoring finish.

A few Sunday results worth catching up on

Among the September 20 finals in PFF's Week 2 roundup:

• Panthers 34, Falcons 3: a difficult result for Atlanta heading into a short week.
• Bengals 20, Texans 6: Houston's second loss looked very different from its opening shootout.
• Browns 23, Buccaneers 19: Cleveland came out on top in a one-score game.
• Seahawks 31, Cardinals 7: Seattle followed its narrow opener with a much wider margin.
• Cowboys 37, Commanders 20: Dallas picked up a division win before its trip to Brazil.
• Chiefs 33, Colts 30: Sunday night supplied another close finish.

Rams 28, Giants 6 closes Week 2

Los Angeles answered its opening loss with a 28-6 win over the Giants on September 21. After scoring seven points against San Francisco, the Rams gave themselves a much better result to carry into their next national television appearance.

One win does not settle every question from Melbourne. It does make Sunday night's trip to Denver more interesting: can Los Angeles follow the home response with another productive game on the road?

• Saturday, Sept. 26, 3:30 p.m.: Oklahoma at Georgia — ESPN.
• Sunday, Sept. 27, 1:00 p.m.: Los Angeles Chargers at Buffalo Bills — FOX.
• Sunday, Sept. 27, 4:25 p.m.: Baltimore Ravens vs. Dallas Cowboys in Rio de Janeiro — CBS. Dallas is the designated home team.
• Sunday, Sept. 27, 8:20 p.m.: Los Angeles Rams at Denver Broncos — NBC.
• Monday, Sept. 28, 8:15 p.m.: Philadelphia Eagles at Chicago Bears — ESPN.

Our Saturday choice is Oklahoma-Georgia. Georgia enters 3-0; Oklahoma is 2-1. The Bulldogs' game notes put Oklahoma's points allowed at 7.7 per game. That makes Georgia's ability to sustain drives a useful thing to watch, beyond the ranking beside its name.

On Sunday, start with Chargers-Bills and leave room for the Brazil game. Buffalo offers a direct follow-up to the offense we just watched. Ravens-Cowboys gives the late window an international setting without requiring an early-morning alarm on the East Coast.
